Leighton G. Snyder, 87, of Akron, NY died peacefully in a Sarasota Hospital after experiencing complications related to a stroke. Leighton was born August 22, 1930 to parents David and Barbara Gingrich Snyder in St. Jacobs, Ontario. While attending Ontario Bible School, he met his sweetheart, Arlene Wideman. They were married September 9, 1951. They resided in rural Akron, NY where Leighton worked for and later became a partner in the Wideman and Snyder Dairy farm. In 1983 he and his son partnered to become Early View Farm. Leighton considered himself a “lifetime” farmer.
Leighton was a member of Clarence Center-Akron Mennonite Church, where he served by leading singing, directing worship, and was a church elder for many years.
Leighton and Arlene retreated to the warmth of Sarasota, Florida for the past 26 winters, where he enjoyed the fellowship and activities of Bahia Vista Estates.
Leighton is survived by his loving spouse, Arlene; children, Lorna and Mel Claassen, Luanne and Don Livingston, and Ron and Cheryl Snyder; grandchildren, Jeff and Mariko Claassen with Ethan, Hannah and Lena, Miriam and Abel Larkin with Madelyn, Levi, and Brayleigh, Dane Livingston, Brice Livingston, Caleb and Kim Snyder with the newest great granddaughter, Leighton, Chris and Amanda Snyder, Rachel Snyder and Beth Snyder. Leighton is also survived by step-sisters, Eileen Martin and Fern Metzger; sisters-in-law, Norine Snyder and Marge Wideman, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
Leighton was preceded in death by his parents; a step-father, Eli Gingrich; 3 step-sisters; brothers, Wayne and Melvin Snyder; brothers in law; sisters in law; 2 nieces; a nephew; and granddaughter, Heidi Claassen.
Leighton held a special place in his heart for his family and he was dearly loved.
Friends and relatives may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Ross Funeral Home, 10 Eckerson Avenue, Akron. A Memorial Service will take place Saturday, February 17 at 11 am at the Clarence Center-Akron Mennonite Church.
