Clara Varo

Clara Varo passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at home. She was born in Akron, NY on June 26,1921 to the late Guido and Fermina (Caporali) Cheavacci.

Clara was a 1939 graduate of Akron Central Schools. She attended Sisters Nursing School and then went on to enter the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. She served on the USS Huddleston as a combat duty nurse during Normandy in WWII and was promoted to first lieutenant upon discharge. Clara retired from the Erie County Home as a nursing supervisor in 1986 and cared for Msgr. Frank for awhile after her retirement. Clara loved gardening and quilt making. She enjoyed baking and was known for her rhubarb and rice pies. She especially loved visiting her daughter in Maine.

Surviving Clara is her sister, Neda Bordonaro along with many nieces and nephews. Clara was predeceased by her daughter, Lauretta Varo in 2012; brothers, Homer and Roland Cheavacci; sisters, Ceilia Dezanet, Jenny Matrone, and Norma Cheavacci. 

Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at Saint Teresa of Avila Parish, 5779 Buell Street, Akron, NY on Friday, September 8, 2017 at  11:30 a.m. (Please assemble at Church). No prior visitation.
